History in Portsmouth
InPortsmouth is pleased to announce the launch of another website History in Portsmouth which features articles relating to some of the People, Places and Events that have made Portsmouth the fascinating city that it is.
Also included on the site is a section reporting the progress of the 1860 (Old Portsmouth) Project. This ambitious programme has set out to accurately re-create Old Portsmouth in 1860 using digital 3D technology. The initial phase of the project is expected to last until 2017, but in the meantime you can keep track of the model's progress and the research behind it. The History in Portsmouth website is a partner to our Memorials and Monuments of Portsmouth website in which we have been aided by Portsmouth City Council, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Imperial War Museum and an enthusiastic band of researchers who hail from across the planet. On the site are details of over 800 local memorials including the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common for which we have provided a searchable database of all 25000 names inscribed upon it. Now you know what's out there, why not visit:- History In Portsmouth Memorials and Monuments of Portsmouth Other local History Sites We must mention Stephen Pomeroy's site which contains a vast array of information about Portsmouth extracted from a wide range of historical documents, mostly available in PDF format. It covers churches, pubs, streets, businesses, buildings, people and much much more. Terry Swetnam's site covering the history of the Police in Portsmouth is also well worth a visit. The Jetsetter Online has an interesting display of pubs that have disappeared in the comprehensive roundup of Pubs in Portsmouth. The site also has a section on the architectural disasters of the Tricorn and Portsdown Park. Another fascinating site is Bob Hunt's Portsdowns Tunnels on which there are descriptions and reports of investigations into many aspects of the history of Portsdown Hill. And whilst we are on the subject of Portsdown Hill, there is information about the forts at Fortress UK. Links to articles formerly on this page have all been moved to the History in Portsmouth website |
