Inportsmouth is pleased to give an airing to the work of Mark Sheridan. We have selected 33 photographs from his extensive collection of Images of Portsmouth, many of which portray different stages in the construction of the Spinnaker Tower. We have also included below a commentary by Mark Sheridan.
I have been a photographer for almost twenty-five years and when I came to live in Portsmouth twenty-two years ago, I was instantly captured with the historical aspects of the naval city and I later became excited by the proposed regeneration of Portsmouth which would eventually culminate in the Spinnaker Tower.

A couple of years ago, I covered the construction of the Queen Mary 2 which naturally included several trips to her builders in St Nazaire, along with her maiden voyage from Southampton. I sold my photographs on CD-ROM to several customers, one of whom was a shop owner in Hamburg!

I always felt that Portsmouth was my principal project and that QM2 was a practice run. I decided to make two CD-ROMs. The first is called Images of Portsmouth and I have included just over one hundred photographs which include Portsmouth Harbour, the city centre, Southsea Common and many other images which I believe portray the city at its finest.

The second CD, and definitely the most challenging was the Construction of the Spinnaker Tower. Controversial though it may be, I felt and I still feel strongly that it will be a fantastic icon of the regeneration of the city. I was looking into the future. The one hundred and twenty photographs on the CD covers all aspects of its construction right up to a few photographs from the tower itself.

Come rain or shine, I love what I am doing and I have been informed that it shows in the photographs in both CDs. They are now for sale at £14-99.
